The judge for the Saturday show, Vincent Chianese, sent the following comments  to the show secretary, Sandrina Phipps.

Sandrina,

I want to thank you and your club for selecting me to judge your 2013 Specialty.

There were many beautiful dogs present and I believe the breed is in good hands in the Atlantic Region. I had several Specials to choose from in BOB and good quality dogs in all of the class as well.

Here are a few comments that I would have made at the dinner. I hope they are taken as constructive and not as derogatory.

I believe that in a show the judge cannot make everyone happy as there is only one winner and the rest feel passed over. I think that it is safe to say that any dogs that made my cuts should feel they had a victory of sorts. This is not to say that the dogs that did not make the cuts were of poor quality but the job requires me to sort them at some point. I hope that everyone came away understanding that for me, both around and especially down and back, movement is the most important single aspect of the breed. It tells so much as to what is under that coat. We can feel if a dog has good shoulder layback and upper arm length but does he use it is a whole other matter. I can live with a not so pretty face or maybe a wider ear placement than I would like to see but not with close, crossing fronts or wide rears that seem to never want to come to a center line. I also had several top lines that broke right after the withers in both dogs and bitches. This also is a unacceptable to me.

I was surprised there were no Award of Merits to be awarded. My guess is that your bylaws have a number of entry requirement that may need to be revised. I think that the 100 dog entry days are long gone and there were a couple of dogs that an AW would have been nice to have been able hand out.

My wife, JD the PWD and I had a great time and we hope to be able to do it again someday.

Thanks

Vinny

Sled Dog Racing Winter 2013

Once the temperatures in the area began to drop in the fall CSHC members began to take their dogs out for sled training. The goal was to be ready to run sprint races scheduled for weekends in January and February. Unfortunately the weather this season was not very cooperative. Many races, especially those closest to us in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York, were cancelled for lack of snow. Frank and Ron were able to get to 4 races: Indian River in Michigan, Kearney in Ontario, Hill Village in New Hampshire, and Kinross in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Joe made it to Indian River and Hill Village.
